Enriched with the green paddy fields, Kuttanad is known as the Rice Bowl of Kerala, rightly named since it is the rice granary of the state. Kuttanad is well known for its farming activities below sea level (4-10 ft), and the beauty of interlacing backwaters. Another interesting fact about Kuttanad is the presence of the major rivers in Kerala, Pamba, Meenachil, Achankovil and Manimala. Kuttanad is also very popular for its avian population, thanks to the paddy fields and the adjoining Vembanadu Lake.
Walking alongside the criss-crossing canals, lined by coconut trees, could show you vendors who move around in small rowing boats selling vegetables, fish and groceries. There would also be workers who dive into the lake to collect lime shells.
Another beautiful sight one could see is the ducks that swim in groups through the narrow canals, guided by the local farmers. You could also find local eateries alongside the canals, which are non other than the local households, who serve fresh food made from the day’s catch.
It is best to visit Kuttanadu along with Kumarakom, as both near to each other. To have a complete Kerala backwater experience, we recommend a day’s houseboat journey in Vembanadu Lake and to spend a day exploring the canal network of Kuttanad.
Have a Good Time!
